puṃs

Dictionary Definition:

Puŋs [Vedic puŋs (weak base) and pumāŋs (strong base), often opp. to strī (woman, female); cp. putra & potaka]. Of the simplex no forms are found in Pāli proper. The base puŋ occurs in pukusa (?), puggala (?), pungava, pullinga; puŋs in napuŋsaka (cp. Prk. napuŋsaveya Pischel, Gram. § 412). The role of puŋs as contrast toitthi has in Pāli been taken over by purisa, except in itthi -- pumā at the old passage D iii.85. The strong base is in P. puman (q. v.). See also posa1.
