Nyanatiloka (1878-1957)

Dictionary Definition: 

  • EoB, vol. 5, p. 593. Founder of the Island Hermitage in Sri Lanka in 1911. His lay name was Anton Walter Florus Gueth (Anton Gueth being the shorter version). Of Catholic background and a violinist, he received novice ordination in 1903 and full ordination in 1904 under Ven. U Kumara Mahāthera, the first ordination of a Buddhist monk of German origin (or, it could be said, the first western monk of non-British origin).
