He had once been known as Durdharṣakāla, and was also known as Śūra, Aśvaghoṣa, Pitṛceṭa, Durdharṣa, Dhārmikasubhūti and Maticitra, etc. (I believe this list of names comes from Che rje's early 13th century medical history.) I-tsing says he composed first the Varṇanārhavarṇane in 400 verses, and afterwards the Śatapañcāśatka.
