Thubten Kunga Chashab, A Study of Religious Expenditure in Tibet in the 19th Century Based on the Biography of Dharmabhadra, Acta Orientalia, vol. 63 (2002), pp. 175-206. Among his other names are Dpal bzang rdo rje, Dbang phyug chos bzang. He was said to be an incarnation of Phyag rdor nor bu, although not formally recognized as such. He was 2nd son of a nomad family, and spent his youth as a shepherd. Among his teachers was Mkhas grub Ngag dbang rdo rje (1720-1803) and Spel khang Paṇḍi ta Blo bzang dge 'dun (the latter taught him Sanskrit grammar and other language arts). He studied poetry with a Bon teacher named Khri chen Mi 'gyur gtsug phud dbang rgyal (b. 1757).
