Agiśala

Dictionary Definition:

  • Name of a slave who seemed to have been the architect the famous Kaniṣka reliquary inscription, although in subsequent re-readings of the inscription this name disappeared. S. Konow believed it represented a Greek name Agesilaos. B.N. Mukherjee interpreted it as Sanskrit agniśala, 'fire hall' or refectory. See Prudence R. Myer, Again the Kanishka Casket, The Art Bulletin, vol. 48, nos. 3-4 (September 1966), pp. 396-403, at p. 396.
