Upāli 優婆利; 優波利 (or 優波離); 鄔波離 A barber ofśūdracaste, who became a disciple of Śākyamuni, was one of the threesthaviras of the first Synod, and reputed as the principal compiler of the Vinaya, hence his title 持戒 Keeper of the Laws. There was another Upāli, a Nirgrantha ascetic.
