Dictionary Definition: 

  • Abbot of a Christian monastery in Egypt, famous to posterity for his monastic rules. Clarke, Monks, p. 37.
  • His Rule was translated by St. Jerome into Latin in 404, and only this translation survives, not the original. One of his rules was that the monks should not own money. They were not to receive gifts from their own relatives.
