Novalis (1772-1801)

Dictionary Definition:

  • Pseudonym of a German poet. Real name was Friedrich von Hardenberg, or Georg Friedrich Philipp Freiherr von Hardenberg. He wrote his famous Hymns to the Night after the death of his fiancé from tuberculosis, and died of the same ailment himself soon after. Lama Anagarika Govinda liked to believe that he was Novalis in a previous life. This is all so very romantic.
