The first poet in Telugu language. Court poet to the Eastern Chalukyan King Rājarājanarendra, a supporter of Shaivism,who ruled from Rajahmundry (on the Godavari River) from 1018 to 1061. Besides poetry, he also composed a grammar of Telugu, in Sanskrit. His main work was a Telugu version of the Mahābhārata.
