Born as Mirra Alfassa, she was French, ethnically Jewish, born in Paris of Turkish and Egyptian parents. She first came in contact with Aurobindo in around 1910, and became a kind of spiritual partner to Aurobindo, taking over his teaching activities as he went into retreat. While still in Paris she had connections with Alexandra David-Neel.
