Eldad ha-Dani

Dictionary Definition:

  • A Jewish merchant and traveler of the 9th century. His letters seem to be the earliest source to hold out the promise that the ten (or nine and one half) lost tribes of Israel might be possible to locate. His letters foreshadow and probably inspired the Prester John letters of the 12th century.
