Disciple of Diṅnāga and Dharmadāsa. A teacher of Dharmakīrti, the Logician. Abbot of Nalendra after Dharmakīrti and before Jayadeva. At the end of his life he went to Suvarṇadvīpa and learned alchemy. It was this early Dharmapāla whose works are not found in Tibetan translations, although four of them were preserved in Chinese, with their translations dating from 650 to 710. Nowadays, he is usually dated to ca. 530-561.
The dates of Dharmapāla the logician are considered to be 530-561 (he lived only until age 31). These dates are considered key to the dating of Dharmakīrti. However, Funayama argues that we cannot rely on the supposed evidence that Dharmapāla cites Dharmakīrti and we must find other evidence. See Tôru Funayama, Two Notes on Dharmapāla and Dharmakīrti, Zinbun, vol. 35 (2000), pp. 1-11.
