Altan Khan (1507-1582)

Dictionary Definition: 

  • See Al than Rgyal po. He is said to have personally adopted Tibetan Buddhism in 1578, which led to the 'second spread' of Tibetan Buddhism in Mongolia. He first gave the title "Dalai Lama" to the Dalai Lama. A grandson of his became the 4th Dalai Lama. (This is true. Some say he was His grand-uncle, which is not true. See Elverskog, Staff, p. 8.)
  • F.W. Bailey, Altun Khan, Bulletin of the School of Oriental & African Studies, vol. 30, no. 1 (1967), pp. 95-104. Here Altun Khan (Alattuna Hana), meaning literally, 'golden king,' is a title of the kings of Khotan.
