The 'middle conveyance' period, characterized as that of thepratyekabuddha, who is enlightened by the twelvenidānas; it is considered as an advance on the Hīnayāna, cf.śrāvaka, but not yet the standard of the altruisticbodhisattva-vehicle, the Mahāyāna.
